The way we feel is largely determined by what we focus on. What we focus on is largely determined by the conscious and unconscious questions we ask ourselves. This means we can control our focus by controlling the questions we ask ourselves.

Try this…
Learn the tone of your inner self talk? Does the narrator in your head, motivate you throughout the day or disempowers and brings you down?

Some examples of the disempowering self-thoughts and questions:

  • What’s the biggest concern in my life right now?
  • What areas of my life aren’t going so well?
  • What am I most unhappy with in my life currently?
  • Why me?
  • Why can’t I ever get it right?
  • What’s with this bad luck lately?
  • I’m a good person, why is this happening to me?

Do you see how asking these questions can get you feeling pretty lousy? These questions basically make you focus on how you’re the victim and how your situation is completely hopeless.

Now try and change your focus, ask yourself these empowering self-questions instead:

  • What’s going well for me right now?
  • What am I most proud of?
  • What am I excited about right now?
  • What went well today?
  • What is promising?
  • What’s good about this situation that I’m probably overlooking?
  • What actions can I take right now to improve my situation?
  • Is there anything I can do right now to change this situation?
  • What am I looking forward to tomorrow?

The difference that the two sets of questions can make is that the empowering questions help put us in a state of mind that is much more effective in finding solutions to our problems. These questions put us in control of the situation rather than make us a victim of it.

For example, if you’re stuck in traffic, instead of being frustrated or stressed out, ask yourself if there’s anything you can do to right now to change this situation. If the answer is no, you must change your focus by asking something like, “Since I’m stuck in traffic anyway, what can I do to make the most of this situation?” Focus on the fact that at least you don’t have a flat tire or you’re not the one in the accident that’s probably causing the traffic. You will see a notable difference in how your mood changes as you start to practice this.
